Doctors Want Parents To Give Peanuts To Their Babies

Doctors Want Parents To Give Peanuts To Their Babies

Should be introduced to peanut-containing foods between 4-6 months of age.

The allergy generally develops in childhood and persists through adulthood.

"It's an important step forward", said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which appointed experts to turn the research findings into user-friendly guidelines.

A doctor may recommend that the infant undergo an allergy test, or have peanut-containing foods fed to him or her for the first time at a doctor's office, to determine whether it's safe for the infant to start eating peanut.

The recommendations provide specific instructions for how and when to introduce peanut-containing foods to infants - for some, as early as four to six months of age - depending on whether they're at high, moderate or low risk of developing the allergy. Instead, parents could use age-appropriate foods, such as smooth peanut butter, the guidelines said. He said the 3-year rule was dropped in 2008 and was replaced by the guidance that feeding children peanut products early on is OK. Just because a child has a sibling or other relative with a peanut allergy does not mean he or she is at high risk, the NIAID and other groups said.

The new NIH guidelines, Poole said, are important because they'll get the word out to doctors and to the public, "so we can, hopefully, make a huge change in food allergy and reverse the bad trend we have seen in the last 20 years". But newer research shows there are benefits to earlier introduction. He asks parents to consult a doctor when picking a peanut food to feed their children and to be aware of choking. These children do not need to first see a specialist and can have peanut-containing foods introduced at home.

All infants should begin eating solid foods before peanuts are introduced.

Babies should be given peanut early - some at four months old - in order to reduce the risk of allergy, according to new U.S. guidance.

"If she didn't have a peanut allergy, I would've still had a hard time with that".

Dr. Scott Sicherer, a professor of pediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, represented AAP on the guidelines and helped write them.

Peanut allergies are more prevalent than ever.

.

Allergy levels are soaring in the USA and have more than quadrupled since 2008.

All the things you learned about preventing peanut allergies may now be the exact opposite.

Calling them back a year later and repeating the challenge, the researchers discovered that all the kids who did not have an allergy at age 5 still did not have peanut allergy at age 6. Brooks said he followed the recommendations with his now 11-year-old son, who had a number of risk factors.

"There is a window where the immune system isn't going to recognize peanut as unsafe and that we believe happens very, very early", Greenhawt said.

Even if your infant is at low risk for developing a peanut allergy, it's always good to watch for symptoms.

About 5 percent of Americans have food allergies of some sort, and 1 to 2 percent have peanut allergies.

"Peanut allergy has literally become an epidemic in recent years, and now we have a clear road map to prevent many new cases moving forward,"said Dr. Stephen Tilles, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI)".
