Theresa May 'risking Northern Irish peace process to secure DUP's Brexit votes'

Theresa May 'risking Northern Irish peace process to secure DUP's Brexit votes'

On Monday, Mr McGuinness resigned as NI deputy first minister over the handling of a botched energy scheme that could cost taxpayers £490m.

Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness is demanding fresh elections in protest at the DUP's handling of an energy initiative, which has seen costs spiral. McGuinness - representing Irish republican political party Sinn Fein - served as deputy First Minister, with Arlene Foster, from the Democratic Unionist Party, as First Minister.

Ms Foster, who became First Minister previous year, was the minister in charge of the scheme at the time and has subsequently come under considerable criticism.

Mr Butler, who sits on the Public Accounts Committee at Stormont, says that dissolving the Assembly now will mean no plan for tackling the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scandal, which could cost the public purse more than £400 million. Already facing its own problems over the UK Brexit vote, an election at this time will nearly certainly just misdirect and paralyse politics there. Sinn Féin will not tolerate the arrogance of Arlene Foster and the DUP.

She said: "I am disappointed that Martin McGuinness has chosen to take the position he has today.

I have a frightful feeling that a campaign with the usual slogans producing the same results, there might be the possibility of things being different", he told the BBC's Today programme. The allegations emerged via a whistle-blower in November and intensified in December when one of Ms Foster's party colleagues Jonathan Bell alleged she had asked civil servants to alter documents to reduce the appearance of her role in the affair. Insisting demands that she stand aside were "ludicrous" she said: "If there's an election there's an election".

A snap election looks to be on the cards in Northern Ireland after the resignation of Martin McGuinness.

The DUP leader oversaw the RHI during her time as economy minister.

The DUP leader has said she hopes the process of getting the inquiry under way can start by the end of the week.

Foster was environment minister when the scheme was thrashed out.

She added: "Clearly, the political situation in Northern Ireland is in flux but, .it is important to bring the devolved administrations together to make sure we are working on how we get the best outcome for the UK".

"It is clear that Sinn Fein's actions are not principled they are political".
