Granite State sees big increase in flu cases

Granite State sees big increase in flu cases

"We are about halfway through the flu season, which typically runs from October 1 to March 31", said Dr. Greg Brock of the Wabash Valley Health Clinic in Terre Haute. Two deaths came just last week.

Officials say influenza infection numbers are extremely high in Washington, as they are in many states.

"It has been somewhat sporadic in the months of November we've seen more in December and certainly even more this month", said Cronin.

"He further said that some media institutions incorrectly reported Influenza AH1N1 is caused by the Bird Flu" and it can create panic among the public. Among the 53 people hospitalized statewide with influenza last week, the median age was 73, according to health department data. Sometimes flu can lead to death.

The free flu vaccine is available from many Saskatchewan pharmacies, some physician offices and public health offices.

"I encourage everyone to get a flu shot if they haven't already". There have been documented cases of multiple people becoming sick after exposure to one or more infected pigs and also cases of limited spread of variant influenza viruses from person to person.

Flu season is upon us. The nasal spray vaccine is not recommended this year because it was found to not be effective at preventing flu over the three previous flu seasons.

"Certainly, the best way is to get a flu shot". Anyone 6 months or older who has not yet received a flu shot should get one as soon as possible, as the vaccine takes two weeks to build up full protection.

Common symptoms of the flu include fever or feeling feverish, a cough and/or sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, chills, fatigue and body aches.

As of late December, Wisconsin health officials cited reports of 161 influenza cases this season, as well as 95 influenza-associated hospitalizations, including eight children and 78 adults ages 50 and older. Di Eccleston, Joint Head of Occupational Health and overall lead for flu, said: "This year has been a real team effort, our Flu Team have worked tirelessly to offer vaccination at all times and locations to make the vaccine more accessible". Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

"We know people may be disappointed that they have to get a shot, but the shot is the recommended option this year", said Ehresmann.

This season's prominent strain is Influenza A H3N2, according to Acting State Epidemiologist Zach Moore, adding that elderly people, children, pregnant women, and people with respiratory conditions are especially vulnerable.
