EPA Notifies Fiat Chrysler of Clean Air Act Violations

EPA Notifies Fiat Chrysler of Clean Air Act Violations

On Jan. 12, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) accused Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) of outfitting certain vehicles with software created to allow them to emit illegally high levels of unsafe nitrogen oxides. "We agreed to set up a mediation commission in Brussels because we have nothing to hide".

Things escalated to "international incident" when Germany's Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt said any cars found to be cheating on emission testing should be recalled. The two officials have been in conflict since May over the company's cars.

The Department for Transport (DfT) will carry out tests on the Jeep, as it did after the Volkswagen emissions scandal broke. Italy's transport ministry said that it did the essential checks and sent an accurate answer to the German authorities which demonstrates that the Fiat 500X, rather than what is guaranteed by Germany, is in consistency with its regulations.

Last Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency accused Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCAU) of violating the Clean Air Act by installing software that allowed some of its diesel trucks to register lower levels of pollutants.

As the allegations go on, the shares of Fiat Chrysler have been fallen to 12.1 percent on the New York Stock Exchange. The commission "must consequently ensure that a recall is organized for the Fiat vehicles". "A discussion should take place on the basis of mutual trust and respect".

But the US government is far from the only one busy with probes related to diesel emissions.

The German Transport Ministry welcomed the EU's comments Friday, with spokeswoman Svenja Friedrich telling reporters that the commission "is now doing exactly what has been demanded for a long time" in pushing for talks with Italian authorities.

The software is believed to have artificially lowered the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOx) produced by the engines during test conditions, then allowing the engines to produce more than the legal limit when driven normally.
