Donald Trump gives United Kingdom ambassador role to Jets owner Woody Johnson

News was the first to report Thursday that Donald Trump will appoint New York Jets owner Woody Johnson as the next US ambassador to the Britain after the president-elect is sworn in Friday, a move that has been expected for some time.

Turning to address Woody Johnson, the owner of the National Football League's New York Jets, Trump called Johnson "ambassador" and said "good luck in St. James".

Johnson got involved in the 2016 election early, serving as finance chairman for the doomed Jeb Bush campaign.

Johnson acquired the Jets in 2000.

Although his appointment is yet to be made official, Johnson is widely expected to take over from Matthew Barzun, who served as United States ambassador to the United Kingdom since 2013.

It is also believed that Johnson would need to resign from all the NFL committees he now serves on, NFL.com reported.

It's unclear how Johnson's absence will affect the day-to-day operation of the franchise. The announcement came during a luncheon in Washington D.C., and Trump's transition team later confirmed the news to NBC.

Johnson's brother, Christopher Wold Johnson, 12 years his junior, reportedly could step into a prominent role in the organization.
