Science goes rogue: U.S. government agencies tackle Trump on Twitter

Yet another "rogue" Twitter account has cropped up in response to Donald Trump's efforts to muzzle government agencies: this time, Rogue NASA is taking to social media to spread climate science. The accounts come from different corners of the government, but all claim to represent workers who are risking their livelihoods by tweeting climate change facts, details of apparent gag orders, and criticism of the Trump administration. Apart from NASA, other agencies that have formed the "resistance accounts' include EPA, FDA, USDA and US Forest Service among others".

"Can't wait for President Trump to call us FAKE NEWS", tweeted the alleged rogue account for the National Parks Service, according to NPR.

The movement gained traction when a former employee of a South Dakota national park Tweeted onto the Badlands National Park's official account: "Today, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher than at any time in the last 650,000 years".

Media reports have suggested that the Trump administration sought to limit how certain government agencies - including the EPA - communicate with the public.

The alternate NASA account seems to serve the same objective.

Twitter dealt with the Badlands National Park account hacking by a disgruntled employee. It beckoned readers to follow its feed "for science and climate news and facts".

At least 14 "rogue" Twitters accounts have since been launched on behalf of U.S. federal agencies.

They also state that while the Trump administration may be able to limit their discourse with the public on official National Park Service Twitter accounts, Donald Trump can not stop National Park Service employees from setting up other Twitter accounts and speaking to the public in their spare time.

Already, all of this online rebellion against what appears to be the new modus operandi against the Trump administration has achieved some victories for its organisers, as yesterday, the US Department of Agriculture announced it was to halt an order to block the publishing of information.

They told BBC News that their goal is to make sure "factual information about climate change and other scientific research continues to be shared during the Trump administration".

"Civil servants have a job to do and part of that job is to interpret the national parks and history behind it", said a former official at the Interior Department, the parent agency of the National Park Service, who spoke on condition of anonymity. You have 75l, 000 people feeling attacked. Many of their messages carried Twitter hashtags #resist or #resistance.
