Apple set to join AI Partnership with IBM, Google and Microsoft

Apple set to join AI Partnership with IBM, Google and Microsoft

"Apple has joined the Partnership on AI as a founding member", reads a blog post on the Partnership on AI website. The Partnership on AI said it will announce its initial program of research and activities "shortly after".

The members will join those on the Board of Trustees, which includes Siri co-founder and CTO Tom Gruber, as well as Greg Corrado (Google/DeepMind), Ralf Herbrich (Amazon), Eric Horvitz (Microsoft), Yann Lecun (Facebook) and Francesca Rossi (IBM).

Tech Crunch notes that six independent individuals are also joining the organization based on their past achievements in the artificial intelligence field. The board will appoint an executive director, who will oversee day-to-day operations.

In addition to creating best practices for AI, the partnership hopes to advance public perception of the technology.

Apple's membership shows the company is committed to the AI race.

The companies "will conduct research, recommend best practices, and publish research under an open license in areas such as ethics, fairness, and inclusivity; transparency, privacy, and interoperability; collaboration between people and AI systems; and the trustworthiness, reliability, and robustness of the technology", according to a statement. Apple has become a major player in AI technology in recent years with the development of Siri, its natural language personal assistant. Bloomberg News noted, however, that Apple lost its edge in AI when other tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft released their own versions - Alexa and Cortana. He also added that the initiative has always treated Apple as a founding member.

"Apple provided input into the organization's [memorandum of understanding] and the organization's tenets", she told TechNewsWorld.

While Apple's participation will be a great thing for the partnership and for the technology as whole, Apple also stands to benefit - not only from the mutual exchange of information but also due to the greater exposure it will gain thanks to the possibility of interacting with some of the greatest minds working on AI on the planet.

"Apple has been very secretive about their AI efforts until quite recently", he told TechNewsWorld, "so this is another indication that Apple is trying to cooperate with the rest of the industry in presenting a common front regarding the promise of AI for non-technologists". He has written for Reuters, Bloomberg, Crain's New York Business and The New York Times.
