Gov. Cuomo offers legal aid to detainees, hotline for families

Gov. Cuomo offers legal aid to detainees, hotline for families

The governor made the announcement Monday, a day before President Trump said he would announce his nominee to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat.

Massive crowds have gathered at New York's JFK airport in protest of Trump's executive order calling for a temporary immigration ban that led to the detainment of several refugees at the airport. In response to confusion over how the order is carried out, or prevented by federal judicial orders, the governor has set up a hotline for families who are trying to locate a relative who might be stranded. "And as they seek to limit women's rights, we in NY seek to protect them". "And those rights have to be protected".

Trump's nomination to the Supreme Court is expected to give the current 4-4 makeup a conservative bent.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said he will provide legal council for immigrants detained in NY airports and announced a hotline for families unsure if loved ones are detained.

"I propose today a constitutional amendment to write Roe v Wade into the state constitution, so that nobody can change it", Cuomo said, to enthusiastic cheers.

Trump has already taken steps against organizations that provide abortions. In New York, two different state legislatures would need to approve the proposal before it is sent to voters.

Andrea Miller, with the National Institute for Reproductive Health, lobbied for the law for years in her former role with NARAL New York.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the state has launched a confidential hotline for New Yorkers to report family members, friends or colleagues missing or believed to be detained due to their status.

"In New York, we will not allow individuals to be abused or violated based on their job, race or religion". She says even though NY has a law legalizing abortion that was approved in 1970, three years before the Supreme Court decision, it's outdated and needs to be modernized.

A small majority of New Yorkers, 51-47 percent, are pessimistic about the country's future under Trump, while last month voters were almost evenly divided with 49-48 percent optimistic. President Trump's executive action against war refugees represents a new low in modern American foreign policy and it is incumbent on us to fight back. "As a New Yorker, I am black, I am gay, I am disabled, I am a woman seeking to control her health and choices", Cuomo said Sunday, "because as a New Yorker, we are one community - the NY community comprised of all of the above".
