Dramatic Footage Captures Attack on Auxiliary Bishop at Newark Basilica

Dramatic Footage Captures Attack on Auxiliary Bishop at Newark Basilica

The Mass - which was being held at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart - was meant to commemorate the 44th anniversary of the death of Roberto Clemente, a Puerto Rican professional baseball player.

A Catholic bishop in New Jersey was slightly injured during a memorial Mass for a revered Hall of Fame baseball player when a crazed man in a white robe walked up to the altar and punched him in the mouth.

Bishop Manuel Cruz was punched in the face in the middle of Mass on January 28 in the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newark, New Jersey (video below).

"This man who came to the altar is my brother and I've been praying for him", he said. He hit the bishop in the mouth and knocked hi to the ground before the suspect was tackled by police. "Some people ducked, others screamed", Bonamo said.

"So, I went out and said, 'Officer, Officer, grab him, stop him, stop him, '" Councilman Luis Quintana added.

Deputies were at the service because the Newark Archdiocese hires them for security, deputies said. I'm going to say a Hail Mary for Bishop Cruz.

Identified as Charles Miller, the man-who had no previous criminal history-has been charged with criminal assault. Investigators have not yet released a motive for the attack.

A spokesman for the Newark Archdiocese told NJ.com that Cruz wanted people to know that they shouldn't get "worked up" about the isolated incident.
