Massachusetts Becomes the Second State to Sue Trump over Muslim Ban

Massachusetts Becomes the Second State to Sue Trump over Muslim Ban

Calling President Donald Trump's temporary travel ban "unconstitutional", Attorney General Maura Healey moved on Tuesday to add MA and the University of MA to a federal lawsuit seeking to strike down the executive order on the grounds that it violates residents' rights to religious freedom and due process.

Healey called the order "harmful, discriminatory and unconstitutional", saying her office has reviewed the order and found it harms MA residents, businesses and academic institutions, in addition to violating federal immigration law and denying legal residents due process.

The legal action follows a weekend in which at least a handful of legal residents, including two UMass Dartmouth engineering professors of Iranian descent, were detained at Logan International Airport as they tried to return to their homes in MA.

Harm to our institutions, our citizens, and our businesses is harm to the Commonwealth of MA.

"It discriminates on the basis of religion and national origin, denies our residents access to due process and equal protection of the law, and violates federal immigration law", Healey said of Trump's order.

San Francisco sued to challenge a Trump directive to withhold federal money from USA cities that have adopted sanctuary policies toward undocumented immigrants, which local officials argue help local police by making those immigrants more willing to report crimes.

The order is necessary to keep potential terrorists out of the country until security procedures are improved, the Trump administration maintains. Advocates of the policies say that they help local police by making undocumented immigrants more willing to report crimes and serve as witnesses if they do not fear that contact with law enforcement will lead to their deportation.

"Our administration has worked with the Attorney General's office and supports her challenging this action", he said in a statement. "We look forward to the courts resolving this matter expeditiously".

Carol Rose, president of the ACLU of MA, said she is confident the president's order will be struck down in the end.

Trump signed an executive order Friday barring immigration from Syria indefinitely and for at least 90 days from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen- and suspending the us refugee program for at least 120 days while "extreme vetting" procedures are developed.

UMass Dartmouth associate professors Mazdak Pourabdollah Tootkaboni and Arghavan Louhghalam were detained Saturday evening after flying home from an academic conference in Paris.

It's the third lawsuit Healey has been a part of against the president.

Four federal judges - in Virginia, Massachusetts, New York and Washington - acted during the weekend to stay implementation of the executive order as tens of thousands of people demonstrated at airports across the country.
