Hostage situation at Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna continues

Hostage situation at Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna continues

All prisons in the state of DE have been placed on lockdown Wednesday amid a hostage situation at one of the facilities, the state's department of corrections announced.

According to Representative William Carson, a member of the House Corrections Committee, details on what was unfolding was still scarce.

"The inmates have control of the building", Klopp said.

Geoff Klopp, president of the Correctional Officer's Association of DE, said there is a hostage situation at the prison, but he did not know how many guards are involved.

State corrections spokesperson Jayme Gravell confirmed that a hostage situation is ongoing, and police negotiators and state police are on the scene, WBOC reported.

An attorney for the union representing guards at a DE prison says at least four guards and one counselor have been taken hostage by inmates.

The Kent County Fire Department responded to the prison around 11:30 a.m. after an alarm was sounded, KYW reported. The all male facility houses 2,500 prisoners - some on death row.

All Delaware prisons are on lockdown, NBC 10 Philadelphia said.

Firefighters were also called to the scene after reports of there being smoke at the scene. A department sharpshooter later shot and killed 45-year-old Scott Miller, according to the report, ending the standoff.
