Joe McKnight Shooter Charged With 2nd Degree Murder

Joe McKnight Shooter Charged With 2nd Degree Murder

He was originally arrested on December 5th for manslaughter but a grand jury has now made a decision to upgrade the charge to second degree murder following further investigation by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office in collaboration with the D.A. According to investigators, McKnight cut Gasser off in traffic and a chase between the two men spanned several kilometres until both men were stopped at a traffic light.

Gasser remained on the scene and gave his gun to deputies, Sheriff Newell Normand said at the time.

McKnight, who was at a passenger's window of Gasser's auto, was shot in the right shoulder, the right chest and the hand.

Gasser admitted to killing McKnight. Based upon the evidence available at the time, Gasser was arrested on December 5, 2016 for the crime of manslaughter.

Ronald Gasser was indicted Thursday on a second-degree murder charge, Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul D. Connick Jr. announced.

Judge June Darensburg from the 24th Judicial District Court increased Gasser's bond to $750,000 following his indictment. Normand said at the time that thorough investigation was needed because of laws providing a defense to certain crimes.

Gasser, if convicted, faces a possible life sentence without the possibility of parole, probation or suspended sentence.

McKnight went on to play at the University of Southern California before being drafted in 2010 by NY, where he played until 2012.
