A Japanese Effort To Remove Hazardous Space Junk Has Failed

A Japanese Effort To Remove Hazardous Space Junk Has Failed

Earlier, Japanese agency reported that space junk collector is encountering some problem and has not been successfully deployed.

The junk collection experiment was scheduled to perform last week, when the tether was due to extend out from cargo spacecraft and had then plucked some of the debris revolving the Earth.

An experimental Japanese mission to remove risky debris from orbit has ended in failure.

More than 100 million different wastes would be in orbit around the Earth, including pieces of old satellites and rockets, posing a risk to the future of space exploration.

After the HTV left the Space Station on January 27, KITE was expected to deploy, but the experiment hit an unknown snag that prevented the tether from unfurling it in the week between undocking from the station and re-entering Earth's atmosphere. It intentionally burned up in Earth's atmosphere at 10:06 a.m. EST on February 5 (12:06 a.m. Japan Standard Time), according to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. It's a frustrating setback given the mounting risks posed by the almost two million bits of junk now swirling around our planet. In June, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced Clean Space, an initiative to remove large objects of debris from orbit by using a giant net gun and robotic arm to snag pieces out of orbit.

"It is certainly disappointing that we ended the mission without completing one of the main objectives", he said.

Researchers theorize the should the amount of space junk continue to increase, it will eventually reach of a density where the number of collisions begins to cascade.

A few weeks later the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) described its comparatively simple and cost-effective plan to magnetically "pull" debris out of orbit with an electromagnetic cable. JAXA continued trying to remedy the situation before the cargo spacecraft reenter the Earth's atmosphere, but failed to do so.
