Elizabeth Warren Silenced: Senator Barred from Speaking for Rest of Sessions Debate

Warren clashed with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell Tuesday night after the Kentucky lawmaker determined that the Massachusetts Democrat had violated a Senate rule against impugning another senator. Civil rights advocates are urging against Sessions' confirmation as USA attorney general based on his record; the letter by King was recently made public. Edward Kennedy, who had called Sessions, then a USA attorney, a disgrace. Warren was merely reading words written by a civil rights icon, who was opposing Sessions' appointment to a federal judgeship in 1986.

"Anyone who has used the power of his office as United States Attorney to intimidate and chill the free exercise of the ballot by citizens should not be elevated to our courts", King wrote. "This simply can not be allowed to happen". Form of words includes quotes, articles or other materials.

Sen. John Thune (R-S.C.) told MSNBC that Warren committed "a clear violation of the rules". Mr McConnell's objection to Ms Warren's speech was put to a vote and senators voted 49-43 in his favour. Elizabeth Warren on the Senate floor, Republicans inadvertently triggered a backlash, earning her censured comments much more attention than they would have otherwise received. Forty-nine Republican senators successfully voted to silence her under Rule XIX. "She was warned. She was given an explanation", McConnell said later.

During confirmation hearing testimony before the committee, former colleagues said Sessions referred to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and other organizations as "communist inspired" and "un-American organizations with anti-traditional American values". "Right away, Democrats took to social media, using the hashtag "#LetLizSpeak" to pressure Republicans into rethinking their stance.

Warren was originally warned after reading from a statement by former Sen. The rule was enacted after a 1902 fistfight on the Senate floor. "I don't get to speak at all". After being silenced on the Senate floor, Warren stepped outside to read the full 10-page letter in a Facebook Live video that has been viewed more than 5 million times as of Wednesday morning. Debate on Sessions will continue into the night, and Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from CT, suggested he intends to violate Rule 19 as well.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell accused Sen.

McCain called it "political theater at its very worst" and said for Warren, it's all about setting herself up for a 2020 presidential run.
