Tesla Model S P100D Sets New and Insane Record

It was bound to happen, but the new Tesla Model S P100D has reached new heights in recent tests where it managed to clock a 0 to 60mph time of 2.28 seconds, setting a new Motor Trend production card record in the process.

So here's how you can try to replicate Motor Trends' test results with your own 2017 Model S P100D.

Faraday Future may say that the FF 91 will be the quickest accelerating production auto on the market but taking the crown from the Tesla Model S P100D won't be easy for it has raised the benchmark once again. Once the cars accelerate beyond 70 miles per hour, super cars like the $1.5 million Ferrari LaFerrari overtake the Model S. But when it comes to accelerating off the line at a red traffic light, this Model S leaves the pack in the rear view.

Although the S P100D's acceleration times are impressive for a stock electric vehicle, Motor Trend said it loses its advantage to other supercars at higher speeds, where horsepower wins out over instant torque. According to the publication, the latest P100D can accelerate to 30, 40, 50, 60mph quicker than any production auto it has ever tested.

The driver then uses a special "launch control" sequence of brake and accelerator pedal pushes to initiate the crushing ground-level blast-off. Back in January, the company surpassed that promise by pushing the vehicle to achieve 2.389 seconds of acceleration. In its more "regular" Ludicrous driving mode, the 0-60mph sprint is calculated at 2.5 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 155mph. They're about even at 0-40 mph as well, after which the Tesla is able to put a little more distance between itself and the Porsche from 60 mph through 90 mph. According to Motor Trend the stunning speed achieved is analogous to accelerating like a real jerk. The Ferrari LaFerrari gets to 70 faster and the Porsche 918 and McLaren P1 both beat the Tesla to 80.
