Senate Passes Mnuchin As Treasury Secretary

Steve Mnuchin has been confirmed as President Donald Trump's pick as Treasury Secretary.

Vice President Mike PenceMike (Michael) Richard PenceTrump celebrates Mnuchin at swearing in Colorado Republican: If Flynn misled Trump "he should step down" DOJ warned Flynn could be vulnerable to blackmail: report MORE administered the oath of office to Mnuchin during Monday's ceremony.

At a White House swearing-in ceremony, Trump said Mnuchin would be a "great champion" for USA citizens.

Mnuchin's confirmation came down almost on a party line vote of 53 to 47, with no Republicans voting against the confirmation.

Shortly after his confirmation, Mnuchin was sworn in the Oval Office where Trump hailed his track record and called him a "financial legend".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was said to be working to schedule a vote in the coming days on the nomination of Wilbur Ross to be Trump's secretary of Commerce. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), voting in favor of the former Goldman Sachs banker and 47 Democrats voting in opposition. "Mr. Mnuchin will help implement that change with a fresh, new regulatory framework that cuts the bureaucratic red tape that costs our economy trillions of dollars each year", said Sen.

Pence conducted the swearing in at 8:45 p.m., as Trump and Mnuchin's fiancé Louise Linton watched him become the president's Treasury secretary.

After a contentious confirmation battle that focused, in part, on his role atop a bank that profited wildly off the foreclosure crisis, Mnuchin steps into a job that will present some early challenges.

However, Democrats decried Mnuchin's business strategies while in private sector.

"I simply can not forgive somebody who took a look at that banking crisis, who took a look at the pain that Wall Street had sent in a wave across all of America and thought, 'Ah!"

Mnuchin, 54, defended himself by saying he worked hard to offer refinancing to homeowners to allow them to keep their homes, adding that his bank provided borrowers with more than 100,000 loan modifications.

And Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, said, "If Steven Mnuchin gets confirmed the banks are going to have the best friend they can have in the Treasury Department".
