Some Local Restaurants Closed For National 'Day Without Immigrants'

The #DayWithoutImmigrants was created to underscore just how much the country's economy is dependent on immigrant workers, and it coincides with a surge in immigration raids in several states.

This accompanying map shows some of the restaurants and businesses in the San Francisco Bay Area that are closing or in some other way supporting the national protest, along with some other demonstrations planned around the region.

In the Bronx, immigrant workers at the Hunts Point Terminal Market, which supplies fresh food to much of New York City's supermarkets and restaurants, observed the strike as well, rallying outside the market in the predawn hours chanting, "Respect, respect".

A number of restaurants and other businesses across D.C. and the nation are closed or operating on restrictions today as part of the "Day Without Immigrants".

Iraqi immigrant Andy Shallal also said that all six restaurants of his Busboys and Poets chain in the Washington area will also stay closed in solidarity with the cause.

"They are our structure, they are some of the best cooks we have, they are very hard workers along with us", Krzebietke said. "That it will really be about true reform that takes into account the human aspect of immigration".

Several Wichita Mexican restaurants are participating in the nationwide "Day Without Immigrants" walk-out by closing their doors for the day.

"We are here and we play a vital part to this community's survival and the country's survival", Christina Castillo of Oakland said.

On May 1, 2006, coinciding with May Day, thousands took to the streets to protest the U.S. Senate passing the so-called Sensenbrenner bill, which pushed to classify as felons undocumented immigrants and anyone who helped them enter or remain in the United States.

The Trump administration, less than a month in, has implemented policies that advocates call anti-immigrant.

Park said they will still be paid for the day.

Like Lal, numerous nation's immigrants doing work to help immigrants simply can't strike, even for a day, in today's political climate.

Organizers are encouraging immigrants to miss class and work and not to shop. "Let the city see what impact it has", he tells the Washingtonian, "when all their favorite restaurants are closed".
