Ottawa Public Health monitoring potential local exposure to mumps

Ottawa Public Health monitoring potential local exposure to mumps

"A neighbouring health unit has informed OPH about 1 laboratory confirmed case of mumps with potential contacts in Ottawa", Eric LeClair, a spokesperson for Ottawa Public Health said in an emailed statement.

Students may schedule an appointment at University Health Services; faculty and staff should contact their primary care providers. Getting vaccinated now will not prevent illness from exposure at the January 27 event, but should prevent getting mumps after future exposures. Though health officials said the risk of getting mumps is low, especially for those who have received a mumps vaccination, students should know symptoms usually begin between 12-24 days after exposure. Anyone who does not have immunity to mumps, either through receipt of the two-dose MMR vaccine or a previous mumps infection, should schedule an appointment to receive the vaccine.

People with mumps can also experience fever, headache, fatigue and inflammation of the salivary glands, causing patients' necks to swell, or even mastitis, inflammation of the breast tissue.

Alberta Health Services says the virus is easily spread in crowded environments, often just like the flu. "People should also wash hands, cover coughs, clean surfaces, and stay home when ill", Dr. Karen Landers, Assistant State Health Officer with ADPH, stated in a press release.

It typically takes two to three weeks to get mumps' symptoms after you've been exposed, although some people who are infected with the virus don't get symptoms.

19 cases of Mumps in Ontario so far compared with the usual annual count of five to 23 has alarmed health officials. Your healthcare provider can help you decide on vaccination needs.

Mumps is a serious contagious disease passed through saliva and respiratory secretions. Certain behaviors that result in exchanging saliva, such as kissing or sharing utensils, drinking after persons, and sharing lipstick or cigarettes, might increase spread of the virus.
