Chiefs part ways with Jamaal Charles

Chiefs part ways with Jamaal Charles

On the same day they signed one franchise standout to a multi-year deal, the Kansas City Chiefs are parting ways with another franchise standout: Jamaal Charles.

And with that, the top players at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' top two positions come off the market.

Chiefs are releasing RB Jamaal Charles, per source.

Berry's average annual salary of $13 million surpasses the benchmark set by the Arizona Cardinals' Tyrann Mathieu, whose deal averages $12.5 million over five years.

Berry would be guaranteed a salary of almost $13 million if he played under the tag again, but that is not something he intends to do.

Berry had a stellar season playing under the franchise tag in 2016, posting 77 tackles and four interceptions - including two returned for touchdowns - for the Chiefs.

It had been rumored for some time that the Chiefs were going to release the 30-year-old back.

That would be a win-win for everybody because Kansas City clearly wants to keep both in order to hold their defense in tact.

In a statement, Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt thanked Charles for his "contributions and dedication", and general manager John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid also shared thoughts on the running back.

Two of the best running backs of the last decade might be on different teams when the 2017 National Football League season begins.

This contract means Berry will nearly certainly play most of his career with the Chiefs, meaning the team is attaching itself to a potential NFL Man of the Year and Pro Football Hall of Famer. I am on the side of the players as much as possible and it is no different here. Once again, Charles missed the end of the season. He's been widely regarded as a positive influence in the Chiefs' locker room. With 259 yards in the fourth quarter, Charles had a shot at topping the NFL's record for single-game rushing yardage, 296 and held by Peterson.
