Galway church offers modern approach to Ash Wednesday

For the sixth year in a row, Episcopal congregations in towns across northern New Jersey will take to the streets on Ash Wednesday, March 1, marking the beginning of the Christian holy season of Lent by giving "Ashes to Go".

"If you go and look at the Glitter Ash promotional page that Parity put together, there is no mention of sin at all", Walton relays.

"Perhaps the significance of Ash Wednesday can best be grasped by reflecting on the words that the priest says as the ashes are rubbed onto the forehead of a Christian: "Remember man that you are dust and unto dust you shall return", said Reverend Father Reece Beltrame, of St Michael's Cathedral.

"We're just putting [the initiative] in front of people to help them think of Lent, as a reminder of it, ' Fr Paddy said, adding that he was confident that in Glenamady, 'a great parish with very active people always thinking of new things for the church".

After school, ashes will also be offered outside the St. Mary's Chapel of the Holy Spirit from 4 to 5 p.m. for those who wish to "drive through".

But some religious leaders think Ash Wednesday should remain glitter-free. The ashes smudged on one's forehead serve as a public mark of faith, unlike getting Communion or praying, which are more private practices, he said.

The other key aspect of the day is that it is the start of the 40 days of prayer, fasting and almsgiving of Lent.

"From one point of view, a person - no matter what their secual orientation might be - they are human being and deserving of respect", he stated.

"We especially need reminders of forgiveness in the tough places of our working lives", he said.
