Hidden Figures cast bring Katherine Johnson to the Oscars

Hidden Figures cast bring Katherine Johnson to the Oscars

Johnson, now 98 years old, thanked the crowd for their support as she appeared onstage alongside Henson and two other lead actresses in "Hidden Figures', Janelle Monáe and Octavia Spencer, as they announced the victor for Best Documentary Feature".

Octavia Spencer, from left, Janelle Monae, Taraji P. Henson, and Kirsten Dunst accept the award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture for "Hidden Figures" at the 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, in Los Angeles. During her career, she not only helped launch the first American into space, but she also helped John Glenn to become the first American to orbit the Earth.

"It was a piece of cake", Johnson previously told WTKR, joking about her legendary math skills during her time at NASA in Hampton. "Sometimes, the names and deeds are the heroes and their names are known to all", said actress Janelle Monae. But her accomplishments go far beyond what was adapted into Hidden Figures.

Academy Award victor Octavia Spencer plays mathematician Dorothy Vaughan in the box office smash.

"That's what you like about math".

Although the movie she and her colleagues inspired failed to take the top prize, Johnson's appearance on stage was something NASA was particularly proud of.

As Johnson once said, "Girls are capable of doing everything men are capable of doing".
