GSP vs. Michael Bisping For The Middleweight Title!

GSP vs. Michael Bisping For The Middleweight Title!

Fans have clamored for a matchup between St-Pierre and former middleweight champion Anderson Silva for years while some speculated that he could be next for the victor of the UFC 209 main event fight between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson.

The Canadian star and former welterweight champ will challenge Bisping for the middleweight title at a date to be determined, in the second half of this year.

It looks like he'll be waiting a little longer, though, with the likes of Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza also wanting a crack at the gold - but fans probably won't complain if the two have a rematch while Bisping is busy.

The 35 year-old GSP will be returning to action for the first time in over three years, having vacated his title in November 2013 after a split decision win over Johny Hendricks in order to take some time out from the sport.

It's official, George "Rush" St-Pierre will be fighting Michael Bisping for the middleweight title.

After spending more than a decade toiling in the upper ranks of the 185-pound division, Bisping, 37, became the unexpected UFC middleweight champion in June 2016 when he scored a first-round knockout of Luke Rockhold at UFC 199. Since then both fighters have made it clear they would be more than interested in accepting the superfight. That would have required a drop to 155 pounds for St-Pierre, who spent his career at 170 pounds. St-Pierre said he believed he was no longer under contract with UFC, claiming the promotion breached their deal by failing to meet a deadline to formally offer a fight.

But those contractual issues were eventually resolved, leading to St-Pierre officially re-signing with the UFC last month.

TMZ notes that no date is set - just that the bout will go down "later in 2017", which could mean this summer, or it could mean around Christmas. "I'll guarantee you right now, hand on my heart".
