Spotify readying launch of lossless Hi-Fi streaming option

Tidal, before it was Tidal, was the first to really play with the idea of charging twice the subscription price for higher quality audio, and what was then known as WIMP initially developed the Tidal brand specifically for that element of its service. With the company already offering details of the Hi-Fi service to a small subset of users, a wider launch shouldn't be too far off.

Spotify has hit 50 million paying subscribers, adding 10 million new members in about five months, the music-streaming company tweeted Thursday. Some screenshots of the offer also mention discounts on limited-edition vinyl records and even a free record for signing up. Another screenshot, however, is making the rounds on Reddit, showing no features apart from lossless audio streaming but for $10 a month. But since convenience will always trump quality, the world has been settling for "good enough" when it comes to the sound of music, especially when it comes to streaming. But when users clicked on the link, they were brought to a page that says there was an error or that the service isn't available in that area. As more people have come on board, Spotify and Apple Music are emerging as the early leaders. Think of it as the music quality that artists, studio engineers, and music producers intended for users to hear. While users have been excited by the new offering, it doesn't appear to be functional yet. It would be interesting to see if Spotify could do a better job of upselling the HD service, given it is starting with a much bigger userbase.
