Lorde announces new single 'Green Light'

With this first single from her upcoming second album Melodrama, Lorde manages to pull off a full-scale musical reinvention without having to renounce her identity. The song marks her first new material since 2015 when she collaborated with Disclosure on their single "Magnets" and joined the charity supergroup #KiwisCureBatten for the New Zealand based charity single "Team Ball Player Thing". Four years later and we finally have our newest Lorde single, "Green Light" and it's showing us a grown-up adult Lorde who has been through a heartbreak herself.

It wasn't easy to pick which song to release first.

Singer's visuals supplement the song perfectly in the "Green Light" music video, which depicts Lorde wearing a pink party dress with Adidas Superstars while she dances down a city street. The aesthetics and style of Lorde's video were a world apart from counterparts like Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. The song opens with haunting piano tones and frustrated lyrics, "I know about what you did and I wanna scream the truth".

And if that wasn't all, Lorde ended her night on the best note, despite having to wear a cast on her arm. She released her breakout debut Pure Heroine in 2013 at the age of 16. Antonoff (boyfriend of "Girls" star Lena Dunham) is also one of the co-writers on "Green Light", and she discussed how well they work together. And I feel like you can really hear that on this record.

Green Light starts slow and builds up into a classic Lorde dance tune, it's quickly clear the song will become a catchy radio tune. "Green Light" is quality radio fare that's perhaps too faithful to the style of its predecessors, a don't-shake-it, don't-break-it comeback single one hopes will pave the way for more daring strokes. "I didn't come back to this part of town for a while and it was good for me I think". I didn't move on right away. The singer brings in a self-reflective perspective to the album that she said would be about "really growing up" as a artist and person.

Reflecting on the difference between LA, New York and Auckland, she spoke of her love for her hometown.

The Lyrics:Those great whites, they have big teeth/ Oh, they bite you.
