Poachers Killed A Rhino At A Paris Zoo And Stole Its Horn

Poachers Killed A Rhino At A Paris Zoo And Stole Its Horn

Southern White Rhinoceroses were once nearly extinct, though have since made a comeback and number about 20,000.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), an worldwide environmental organization that categorizes endangered species and supports conservation efforts, lists white rhinos as "near threatened", rather than endangered and cite poaching as one of the biggest threats to the animal.

But the poachers appear to have been disturbed as his second - partially sawn - horn was left behind.

Poachers broke into a French zoo and murdered a beloved white rhinoceros, chainsawing its horn off, according to French investigators.

"Animal parks throughout Europe have been put on alert to look out", Paul de La Panouse, former historic director of the African enclosure at Thoiry zoo, told French journalists, The Guardian reported.

The perpetrators forced the main gate to the Thoiry zoo near Paris and broke through at least two other security barriers on Monday night, without disturbing five people who live on the grounds. The horns are used in traditional Asian medicine for a variety of ailments, and are even said to be an aphrodisiac.

"Vince was found this morning by his carer who, very attached to animals, is deeply affected", it wrote.

They said: "It is possible that the thieves did not have time to attack other animals". It is thought that a poacher is behind the attack, as rhino's ivory horns are in high demand on the black market.

Vince was born at Burgers' Zoo in the Netherlands in 2012, and was transferred to the Thoiry Zoo in March 2015.

Zookeepers discovered his carcass Tuesday in the rhinoceros' enclosure. "It's a job for professionals".

"The continued assault on Africa's rhinos year after year shows the need to redouble efforts across the rhino horn trade chain", Ginette Hemley, WWF's senior vice president of wildlife conservation, said in a statement.
