Cowboys plan to release quarterback Tony Romo

Cowboys plan to release quarterback Tony Romo

Adam Schefter is reporting that the Cowboys will release Tony Romo on Thursday when the new league year opens.

Romo, who turns 37 in April, holds numerous team's passing records with 34,183 yards and 248 touchdowns.

Romo turns 37 next month and the speculation is he could join either the Denver Broncos or Houston Texans. But Romo would still count $10.7 million on the 2017 cap and $8.9 million on the 2018 cap. Romo has $19.6 million in dead cap space if he is cut. If Romo lands in Denver - it is his preferred destination - it'll be on a deal that recognizes his talent and accomplishments, but also protects the Broncos against injury. Romo will be free to sign with any team.

If the Texans are unable to sign Romo, the belief is that they would then pursue quarterback Jay Cutler once he gets released by the Bears. Why keep paying Tony Romo huge money to back-up Prescott when they could bring someone in for cheaper or draft someone to back-up Dak? Below, we'll highlight some of the more notable comments made by fans like you via Twitter.

Where is the best fit for the longtime Cowboys quarterback?

Romo, 36, missed much of 2015 and 2016 with a compound fracture of his L1 vertebrae.

The move would give Romo a chance to sign elsewhere and allow the Cowboys to end any conversation about whether Romo or Prescott would be their starting quarterback moving forward.

It would not have happened if it didn't make at least a little financial sense.
