TSA Institutes New Universal 'Comprehensive Pat-Down' Policy At Airports

TSA Institutes New Universal 'Comprehensive Pat-Down' Policy At Airports

The Transportation Security Administration's new pat-down procedure "will be more thorough and may involve an officer making more intimate contact than before", employees at Denver International Airport were told last week, according to Fox Denver.

According to travelers who were the TSA's guinea pigs during the policy's development phase, airline passengers were told to expect a "more intense horizontal and vertical" pat down, and, indeed, one man described his experience, confusingly, as "most intriguing, intense and invasive" search he'd ever had (that nearly sounds like he liked it).

According to the agency's website, "TSA officers use the back of the hands for pat-downs over sensitive areas of the body".

Pat-downs have always been part of the TSA's security screening process.

The change in protocol came after a 2015 study by the Department of Homeland Security revealed that the TSA failed to detect banned substances or weapons in 67 out of 70 tests administered by undercover teams, ABC reported.

Auxiliary pat-downs have been an unpleasant and unwelcome part of this experience as well, and if you thought they were invasive before, the TSA would like you to brace yourself. That may well be necessary considering that one needn't have so much as a high-school diploma to get a job as a TSA screener, but it's hardly reassuring.

Before the change was rolled out, agents chose from several different types of pat downs when a traveler set off a metal detector or were flagged. As of Thursday, the agency is now conducting "comprehensive" pat-downs on all passengers who require pat-downs. It's not expected to increase overall security delays, but it will slow the person who gets the pat-down. Other times, TSA will conduct random physical checks.

"To be patted down in a very uncomfortable position - not what I'm looking forward to", said traveler Susan Dawson.

You'll be hearing "the TSA touched my junk" more often under the agency's recent rule changes. Even passengers who normally receive expedited screening, such as TSA Pre✓®passengers, may at times receive a pat-down. The TSA merely has to make it look like it's doing something to protect flights - while reducing the "cognitive burden" on its agents, of course.
