Vimeo arrives fashionably late to the 360 video party

Vimeo arrives fashionably late to the 360 video party

With its new Gear VR app, the company is trying to ensure that 360-degree content is seen by the largest possible audience.

"Vimeo's creator community is known for pioneering new video formats and pushing the boundaries of storytelling", said Anjali Sud, svp and gm of Vimeo's creator platform, in a statement. And while there's been a lot of hype about virtual reality and 360 video over the past year, some wonder how much people actually want to watch it. The mobile VR headset, you may recall, was developed in partnership with Oculus.

While the app is separate from Facebook feeds, users will find the same reactions for content, as well as the ability to share (and shares will appear on the usual newsfeed, not just in front of other goggle-owning friends). These settings will be available to all of Vimeo's creators, who will also gain access to a "360 Video School" to learn the ins and outs of shooting and editing on 360-degree cameras. This is believed to be the first-ever Facebook-branded VR app out on the market. The Explore feed will offer up content from across Facebook, while the Following feed will only show you 360 photos and videos that your friends and those you're following have posted.

Vimeo admits that it took time for it to bring support for 360-degree videos to its platform. Vimeo has launched Vimeo 360, a new hub that will spotlight 360-degree filmmaking while offering numerous creative resources to its users.

"Vimeo has always been committed to preserving and delivering the highest quality video and our move into 360 expands our premium video technology solution to 360 filmmakers", Vimeo's director of video product Sara Poorsattar said in a statement, as quoted by The Verge. When you're on mobile or on your desktop, you can still view and watch photos and videos in this new format, but it's not as immersive as intended.
