'A Day Without a Woman' event planned for Arizona State Capitol

'A Day Without a Woman' event planned for Arizona State Capitol

We must also recognize many women can not afford to join the strike, because they are living paycheck to paycheck or can not risk retaliation from work.

The "Day Without a Woman" strike has been organized to coincide with International Women's Day taking place in more than 30 countries that day.

But not all women agreed with the Day Without a Woman strike. As we walk out today, we will continue to demand that Republicans abandon their crusade against women's health care, reproductive freedoms and economic security.

One of the reasons the event started at 5 p.m. Wednesday was to give women who worked all day, or took care of their families, a chance to take part.

"When millions of us stood together in January, we saw clearly that our army of love greatly outnumbers that of fear, greed and hatred", the Women's March organizers say. "If they request leave, if it is a certain type of leave we generally are in the practice of approving that leave", she said.

In Chapel Hill, N.C., where three-quarters of the 2,000 school district employees are women, officials said 400 workers - including teachers, bus drivers and cafeteria staff - indicated they would participate in the strike.

"It's a decision that we took around safety and the ability to deliver instruction for our students on that day", she said.

"We want this to be a day where women feel empowered to take a stance on their value in the workplace and the world beyond", Women's March spokesperson Cassady Fendlay said.

The District of Columbia school district said that it expected students and staff to be in school on Wednesday.

On International Women's Day, the left has made a decision to celebrate the day by encouraging women to boycott work and refrain from going to big businesses.

Rep. Lois Frankel (Fla.), chairwoman of the Democratic Women's Working Group, told The Hill on Tuesday that members had considered abstaining from votes on Wednesday to participate in A Day Without a Woman.

Not everyone in Denver observed International Women's Day by rallying.

While plenty of occupations are overwhelmingly male, like roofers and mining machine operators, women make up a large percentage of the occupations with which many of us interact on a common basis.

"The women striking today promote the ideals of a small subset of women in this country".

Women in Iceland protested the gender pay gap, women in Poland and South Korea protested restrictive abortion laws and women in Argentina protested violence against women.

The organizers of the March 8 "A Day Without A Woman" strike have called for women and men to refrain from paid and unpaid labor, refrain from shopping, except at businesses owned by women and minorities, and to wear red in solidarity with the cause.

It may be recalled that a similar march had been organized on February 16 against the immigration policies of President Trump, when restaurants in Washington were closed to show importance of immigrants in America's daily life.
