Donald Tusk re-elected as European Council head

Donald Tusk re-elected as European Council head

European Council President Donald Tusk (L) talks with Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel (R) upon their arrival for a meeting as part of the EU summit on March 9, 2017 at the new "Europa" building in Brussels. Donald Tusk has done a good job.

The 27 remaining European Union states are now preparing a joint declaration to mark later this month the 60th anniversary of a founding treaty of the bloc.

Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski told TVN24 channel that "we'll do everything we can to ensure that the vote won't take place today". "One country can not block a decision".

The Polish Government insisted that Tusk had violated his mandate by interfering in domestic politics.

Despite its anger, however, Poland, was left isolated as other countries including traditional central European allies lined up to back Tusk, a popular choice to guide the EU through hard Brexit talks and tense debates on migration.

But on Thursday, Mr Orban abandoned Poland to back Mr Tusk, former leader of Poland's Civic Platform (PO) and a sister party to Hungary's ruling Fidesz in the European People's Party.

Twenty-five years after the collapse of communism and a decade after Poland led the accession of eight former Soviet-bloc countries to the European Union, its prime minister was elevated by his peers to one of the most senior posts in Brussels. One EU source said it is "doubtful" the Commission will introduce more legislation to limit the gender wage gap, but that the executive could recommend measures for countries with particularly big differences in average pay between men and women.

"I see his re-election as a sign of stability for all of Europe, and I am happy to continue working with him", she added.

The Tusk issue nevertheless highlights a growing split between the older, western European Union nations led by Germany and France and the poorer, newer countries in the east freed from the Soviet yoke. It is one of the bloc's most prestigious jobs, and involves chairing summits and coordinating the work of member countries. That stance had no effect on the outcome of the president's election.

Muscat said ahead of the summit: "The item is on the agenda, so I think that usually when an item is on the agenda one has to decide on that item".

Poland's nationalist government had proposed little-known Polish EU lawmaker Jacek Saryusz-Wolski to replace Tusk, whose current term ends May 31. The economic success and diplomatic clout it enjoyed inside the EU were an inspiration for others, including European countries yet to join.

She showed no remorse for Poland's stance at the summit, saying her country had the right to take a stand.
