Elon Musk Bets He Can Fix Australia's Blackout Crisis in 100 Days

Elon Musk Bets He Can Fix Australia's Blackout Crisis in 100 Days

Tesla Inc.'s Elon Musk has set his sights on Australia, betting his company's battery technology can help solve the country's energy problems and save it from a repeat of the blackouts that struck households and businesses in the south for several days previous year.

Musk's ambitious pledge comes as the state continues to suffer from frequent blackouts since September 2016 - an issue that has sparked a political brawl over energy policies.

"Tesla will get the system installed and working 100 days from contract signature or it is free", Musk quickly responded. "That serious enough for you?", Musk wrote on Twitter.

Piqued by a comment made by a Tesla executive staff member to the Australian Financial Review, Australian billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes asked Musk about it on Twitter. The latter was impressed by the offer, who asked for Musk to message him the approximate costs for a 100-megawatt battery, cheekily adding "mates rates!"

It seems the process has already been started as Sarah Hanson-Young, Senator of South Australia and Jay Weatherill, Premier of the state reached out to Elon Musk.

The blackouts - all happening in quick succession over the last couple of months - were caused by higher-than-expected demand, which overloaded some major thermal energy generators at a time when wind power generation was surprisingly low. Enter Musk and his energy-focused companies who chose to help the state with its energy woes. He is also chairman of SolarCity (Swiss: SCTY.SW - news), a solar panel installer recently bought by Tesla. The CEO said if he is not able to complete the project within 100 days, he would not charge a penny.

Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull tweeted on Sunday that he had a "great in depth discussion" with the tech billionaire about "energy storage and it's role in delivering affordable & reliable electricity".

South Australia is vulnerable due to its energy requirements.

Would you bet against Elon Musk?

"We don't have 300 MWh sitting there ready to go but I'll make sure there are [.] We could install everything and get it up and running within 100 days", Rive claimed at the Powerwall 2 launch in a converted substation at Newport, near Melbourne. He also acknowledged Musk's proposal and said in a statement that he is "looking forward" to evaluating and discussing the proposal.

The legendary CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX has promised the world things as realistic as affordable all-electric cars, and as out-of-this-world as the colonization of Mars.
