Snow causes flight cancellations, delays at St. Louis Airport

Snow causes flight cancellations, delays at St. Louis Airport

JetBlue Airways, with major operations in Boston and NY, had already canceled more than 600 flights scheduled for Tuesday, FlightAware said.

Blizzard conditions across the mid-Atlantic and Northeast caused flight delays and cancellations Monday at Orlando International Airport ahead of predicted 20-inches of snow through Tuesday.

As of 9:30 a.m. Monday, Southwest has also already canceled 116 Wednesday flights. The markets affected include New York City, Newark, Boston, Washington D.C, Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Of the remaining counties, all but Cape May will be under a winter storm warning from Monday evening through most of Tuesday.

Although flight activity is near zero, the Port Authority of NY said all three airports remain open.

The airline said it is attempting to contact and re-accommodate customers on all canceled flights.

At Pittsburgh International Airport, a number of flights have been canceled.

Nationwide, more than 4,280 flights had been axed since Sunday, according to a 11:55 a.m. ET check of flight-tracking service FlightAware.

Travelers are advised to check their airlines for updates.

Tuesday's high is only expected to reach 70 degrees - several degrees below normal, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

As residents of the Northeast awakened on Tuesday to a heavy snowfall, the region's airports had curtailed operations and airlines had canceled over 5,000 flights. Many flights out of St. Louis Airport pass through O'Hare or Chicago Midway airports. Southwest and American Airlines account for the majority of cancelations.

Suzanne Pynto found herself stuck at MIA, along with hundreds of other travelers, waiting to hear word on when flights will resume. The details and covered destinations varied by carrier, though they generally allowed customers to make one change to their tickets without paying change fees that typically cost $200 or more.
