Nicola Sturgeon launches formal bid for second Scottish independence vote

Nicola Sturgeon launches formal bid for second Scottish independence vote

So, there won't be another referendum on Scottish independence after all - at least, not yet.

If the go-ahead for an independence referendum is given, Sturgeon wants a vote to take place between the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019, just as Britain's Brexit negotiations with Brussels would be coming to a head.

Interview: Scottish government permanent secretary Leslie Evans - "Where else would you want to be a civil servant than in Scotland at the moment?".

Theresa May rebuffed Nicola Sturgeon today by saying "now is not the time" for another Scottish independence referendum.

Sturgeon revealed she would make these national aspirations official Monday at a press conference held at her official residence of Bute House in Edinburgh where she said it was "important that Scotland is able to exercise the right to choose our own future at a time when the options are clearer than they are now, but before it is too late to decide on our own path", according to BBC News. Previous year we were elected with the highest share of the constituency vote own by any party in the history of devolution on a manifesto that said this - "the Scottish Parliament should have the right to hold another referendum if there is a significant and material change in the circumstances that prevailed in 2014, such as Scotland being taken out of the European Union against our will".

May has said she will fight for Britain as a whole, including Scotland, in the upcoming European Union negotiations and the government has held out the promise of more autonomous powers for Scotland as some areas of European Union control - such as agriculture and fisheries - are handed back to Britain.

The prime minister added: "My message is clear - now is not the time".

However, May has not explicitly revealed so far whether she would block a second Scottish independence referendum. "We will vote against any request for a Section 30 next week". There was no immediate response from British Prime Minister Theresa May's office.

Speaking to The Guardian, Mr Robertson said: "There may only be days, may only be weeks, but where all of our efforts are now focused is trying to convince the United Kingdom government to come to a compromise agreement protecting Scotland's place in Europe".

The First Minister has also said having the referendum at a later date could mean the country is outside of the European Union and single market for a "lengthy period".

Angus Robertson told the Guardian his party's priority was to protect Scotland's membership of the European single market, and he was pressing the Prime Minister to offer a special deal to make this possible.

Sturgeon said she was not turning back on further discussions should United Kingdom government change its mind.
