Germany must pay more for defense United States provides

It was a meeting of might, if not of minds, when the German Chancellor and the new U.S. president met for the first time in Washington.

A White House official said Merkel's staff reached out to Ivanka Trump about setting up the meeting.

Merkel maintained her composure even when Trump repeated his contention that former President Obama may have tapped his phones in Trump Tower.

Trump may have been attempting to somehow make light of either his own claims, or Merkel's history as a target of the NSA.

But when the second German reporter quizzed him about the controversy's latest incident - White House press secretary Sean Spicer repeating a claim that British intelligence eavesdropped on him for the Obama administration - he engaged.

Merkel, whose visit with her new USA counterpart was marked by cool distance in their public appearances, was left to explain that trade negotiations are the province of the European Union, not her government, and that there are no such German interlocutors.

He said the administration was quoting a "very talented legal mind", referring to Fox News commentator Judge Andrew Napolitano. "Many nations owe vast sums of money from past years and it is very unfair to the United States". "Fox News knows of no evidence of any kind, that the now-president of the United States was surveilled at any time, in any way".

"I don't believe in an isolationist policy, but I also believe that a policy of trade should be a fair policy", Trump said.

Mrs Merkel said Germany had committed to increasing its military spending to the previously agreed level of 2% of GDP for NATO's European members.

"I think that's the right way of going about it". The responsibility for housing refugees, Merkel added, was something the two leaders had "an exchange of views" on.

Trump, who has promised to reinvigorate U.S. industry and provide more jobs, was impressed by what he heard about the vocational training offered by German firms.

Any "close cooperation", she said, must be on the basis of the "values of democracy, freedom, respect for the rule of law and human dignity, regardless of origin, skin color, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political belief".
