Leishman stalks leaders in Florida

Leishman stalks leaders in Florida

Vikki Laing, who turned 36 earlier in the week, was next best among the Scots with a level-par 73 to sit joint-29th.

From trampled grass left of the 18th fairway, a tree slightly in his way, Hoffman chose to punch a 7-iron and have it run down the firm fairway.

After a series of near misses on Sundays, Marc Leishman is ready to take the bull by the horns during the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida.

Perhaps that is understandable, as this tournament marks only the third event of the year for the four-time Major champion. Mr. Palmer was the King, there's a reason why he had the name ...

Defending champion Jason Day coped with "brutally chilly" temperatures to finish three strokes behind first-round leaders Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick and Argentina's Emiliano Grillo at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando on Thursday. He is five shots behind. Kisner had a chance to win, but he couldn't deliver a birdie or better on 18.

Fowler had a double bogey on No. 3, but he followed that up with three consecutive birdies, four more on the back nine, and an eagle on the sixteenth, racing up 47 spots himself.

European Ryder Cup player Matthew Fitzpatrick took up the baton on behalf of the global players, shooting 69 to lie second on eight under par before the afternoon wave of players came out to play.

"Those 35-40 footers are luck but if I keep making them inside 10 feet I'm going to be OK", he said. "So you've still got to make birdies and attack". He was just shy of a 59, missing a 9-foot putt on No. 18, but he won't need to post a number quite so impressive to take home the title this week.

"If I go and three-putt 16 after, I mean a pretty good bogey on 15, the wind's out of your sails", he said.

Joining Hoffman is Kevin Kisner, who shot four-under on the day.

I felt it was in there. Instead of getting a blue blazer, the victor now will get a red cardigan, like the King once wore.

The 27-year-old Northern Irishman started the round 11 shots behind overnight leader Hoffman, but five birdies on the back nine moved him up the leaderboard.

"I'm not a cardigan guy".

"I'm going to feed off those last three holes going into tomorrow and go from there", Hoffman said.

Fitzpatrick, though, struggled for consistency, as he dropped shots on the first, third and eighth holes, with two birdies seeing him through the back nine at 37, one over for the day at seven under.
