Syria: Israeli warplanes strike targets in Syria

Syria fired missiles at Israeli warplanes early Friday after a series of Israeli airstrikes inside Syria - a rare military exchange between the two hostile neighbors that was confirmed by both sides. The only Israeli operations in Syria that are publicly acknowledged and announced by the IDF pertain to aircraft, tank and artillery strikes in response to fire from Syrian territory quite close to Israel's border.

The Syrian Army command said in a statement it had downed one of the Israeli Air Force jets that violated its airspace, while the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) denied these claims to Sputnik.

Syria used Russian-made SA-5 surface-to-air missiles and Israel responded with its new anti-ballistic Arrow system, the Haaretz newspaper reported.

Hezbollah's Secretary-General also addressed the Syrian civil war, saying: "After six years of war in Syria, the countries and global forces that devised the plot against Syria are faced with the bloody reality, which is a disappointment and a failure".

The Israeli analyst said that the exceptional event in Thursday's clash was that the Syrian radars discovered the Israeli jets as they were flying over the Syrian airspace, noting that one of the missiles which hit the Jordanian territories also embarrassed the Israeli army forcing it to confirm the clash.

A surface-to-air missile (SAM) was intercepted using the Arrow system, created to stop long-range ballistic missiles, reports say. Several anti-aircraft missiles were launched from Syria following the mission and the Israeli aerial defence systems intercepted one of the missiles.

The incoming missiles also set off warning sirens in the Jordan Valley, home to the ancient city of Jericho as well Palestinian farming villages and Jewish settlements.

"Israel does not usually confirm or deny individual raids, but it may have been led to do so this time by the circumstances of the incident", Israeli worldwide news TV channel i24 News reported on the issue.

"Our policy is very consistent", Netanyahu said.

Israeli warplanes had attacked several targets in Syria, the IDF said, prompting the Syrian attack. "Every time we identify a transfer like this, we will work to prevent the transfer of game-changing weapons". The Israeli army did not reveal the target of its overnight airstrikes.

A few years into the war, Hezbollah joined forces with Assad, sending thousands of its fighters to reinforce Syrian troops.

Israeli media said one missile was intercepted by the Arrow system north of Jerusalem.
