Device cabin ban on some U.S. flights from Mideast

Device cabin ban on some U.S. flights from Mideast

Around a dozen Middle Eastern and African countries are expected to be affected.

The directive is reportedly the result of a security threat and could be announced as soon as Tuesday.

In a written statement, the Department of Homeland Security said, "We have no comment on potential security precautions, but will provide any update as appropriate".

Also not immediately clear were how many airlines or airports a possible electronics restriction might affect.

In the now deleted tweet, officials with the airline said that starting March 21, passengers will no longer be able to bring certain portable electronic devices on board with them.

The officials said no American carriers were affected by the ban, which would involve devices larger than a cell phone.

In it, the TSA is said to have told the airlines that passengers traveling on flights to or from the U.S. should check any laptops, Kindles, iPads or similar devices into the hold.

The statement said that "following instructions from the concerned USA departments", the airline would be banning any electronic device in flight cabins except for "cellular telephones and medical devices".

No other airlines had issued any statements or new passenger guidance by late afternoon Monday.

The demand was circulated in an email to airlines marked "confidential" on Monday, the outlet reported, and would forbid passengers from carrying any form of tablet, gaming device, camera or laptop in the cabin. Royal Jordanian's flights to Montreal, which now continues on to Detroit, would also be affected.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration told TIME to speak with the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

Meanwhile people are responding to the Royal Jordanian post and seem super frustrated with the sudden rule change.
